The Americans With Disabilities Act

When did the ADA become a law?The Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law on July 26, 1990. All parts of the law are now in effect.

What kind of law is the ADA?The ADA is a comprehensive civil rights law. It prohibits discrimination on the basis ofdisability in employment, state and local government programs, public accommodations, commercial facilities, transportation, and telecommunications.

What is the definition of disability? It is important to note that “disability” is a legal term, rather than a medical one. It has a legal definition, and that definition is defined differently in different laws. The ADA defines a person with a disability as a person who has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities.

Tammy has a training session that is a one day, seven hour session that covers the aspects of ADA that apply to state, city, and local Department of Transportation [DOT] issues regarding ramps, sidewalks, crosswalks, and so forth.

This training can be used by the DOT or city to train contractors, employees, and so forth in accessibility and construction issues.
