ALL OVER AMERICA!
On the way out to Arizona, on our last trip, we had stopped at a Stuckey’s travel center in Adrian, Texas. Right off the I-40 near the New Mexico border. For the past 8 years they have taped butcher- paper to the walls of the stalls in their bathrooms. At the top of each sheet, it says: Tell us about your trip.
The comments on the paper are heart-warming, happy, sad, exciting, human, and more. They are funny, inspirational, and some bring a tear.
Thousands travel all over America-- on their way to vacations, to pick up loved ones, to bury loved ones, moving to a new job, going off to college, etc.
They are a kaleidoscope of the life we live and endure. I asked the owners if I could bring some sheets home and put them on my Website. They so graciously allowed me to do so.
Below are some of the comments, and then as they send me more, I will add those, too.
Hopefully, as people become aware of the site, they will send photos of themselves, let us know how their trip turned out, and share their travels with us.
I just wanted to add a really neat video about America:
HI ! Tell us About Your
Everyone has a story to tell. Some better than others, some worse. Me, I’m traveling from Oklahoma to Arizona. It’s a 17 hour drive, not the best, but the knowledge of having the most amazing friends & family in the world and knowing I will soon be back in OK w/them soon, tops all stories. (She wrote this near the top and put a box all the way around it…then she wrote the following below it: )
I’m forever blowing bubbles,
Pretty bubbles in the car.
They fly so high
They reach the sky,
And like our dreams they fade and die.
Fortunes always hiding,
I looked everywhere.
I’m forever blowing bubbles,
Pretty bubbles in the air!!

That is really smart at the price of gas!
(And now I must add an editorial note—we used to live in rural Kansa and would drive 85 mile to just go to Sam’s Club…but what many city people do not realize is that many rural stores, the prices are just exorbitant, they do not have a large selection, and if you make an all-day drive and trip to a larger city, combined errands, you have saved in merchandise and groceries much more than your gas cost you)

The following isn't from Stukey's, but it does show America:
This might brighten your day. It is a little-known story from the Pentagon on 09/11/2001. I first heard it a few weeks ago when one of my students gave it in a speech.
I have tried to find out if it is true or just an urban myth, but have not been able to verify its truthfulness. However, it is on several military websites, so I suspect its veracity. Either way, it is a great story.
“During a visit with a fellow chaplain who happened to be assigned to the Pentagon, I had a chance to hear a first-hand account of an incident that happened right after Flight 77 hit the Pentagon. The chaplain told me what happened at a daycare center near where the impactoccurred.
This daycare had been informed they must evacuate immediately. The daycare supervisor, looking at all the children they needed to evacuate, was in a panic over what they could do. There were about 4 children for each adult.
There was no time to try to bundle them into carriers and strollers. There were many children; toddlers, as well as the infants that would need to be taken out. Also of concern was, once outside, how could they contain or hold that many children?
Just then a young Marine came running into the center and asked what they needed. After hearing what the center director was trying to do, he ran back out into the hallway and disappeared. The director thought, 'Oh Well, here we are on our own."
About 2 minutes later, that Marine returned with 40 other Marines in tow. Several of them grabbed a crib with a child, and the rest started gathering up toddlers.
The director and her staff then helped them take all the children out of the center and down toward the park nearthe Potomac and the Pentagon.
Once they got about 3/4 of a mile outside the building, the Marines stopped in the park, and then did a fabulous thing - they formed a circle with the cribs, which were quite sturdy and heavy, much like the covered wagons in the Old West.
Inside this circle of cribs, they put the toddlers, to keep them from wandering off. Outside this circle were the 40 Marines, forming a perimeter around the children and waiting for instructions.
There they remained until the parents could be notified and come get their children.”
The chaplain then said, "I don't think any of us saw nor heard of this on any of the news stories of the day. It was an incredible story of our men there.
There wasn't a dry eye in the room. The thought of those Marines and what they did and how fast they reacted; could we expect any less from them? It was one of the most touching stories from the Pentagon."
Remember Ronald Reagan's great compliment: "Most of us wonder if our lives made any difference. Marines don't have that problem."
